5 basics everyone needs in their wardrobe

the ultimate must haves

clothes aren’t going to change the world. the women who wear them will.

– Anne Klein

hello! this is t from talkswithtea and i am here to assist all of your fashion emergencies!

for my first blog post, i will be talking about the most important step to build a wardrobe of your dreams – the basics. most people fail to realise how big a role these 5 pieces play in the making of a chic, stylish wardrobe. these are the building blocks of fashion, creating a minimalistic or a dressy look, depending on your mood and requirement.

1. a white tee

in the above images, you can see how a white tee can be worn in 4 different styles, creating 4 extremely different yet trendy looks. paired with the right accessories, a simple white tee can be transformed into something voguish , yet extremely comfortable. a white tee is the most versatile piece of clothing you can own and it is a must have in every fashion fanatics’s wardrobe.

a white tee is also my go-to layering option as it always gives a clean, finished look to your attire.

2. a pair of fitting denim jeans

let me put it this way – your best friend are a pair of jeans that are a perfect fit and compliment your body structure. they don’t have to be of a specific type, material, or fit, the only criteria you have to keep in mind is that how those jeans can flatter YOU and your body type.

to make it more clear, i will talk about my expertise in this area, which i have gained after years of experimenting with different types of denim.

i have a petite body and a curvy frame, so for me, my perfect fit are light washed denim mom jeans, with a high waist to compliment my height. earlier, when i wanted to fit in the norms of the fashion world, i was determined to make skinny jeans my go-to, which not only resulted in the downfall of my entire look, but also made me look like a waddling penguin. it took me some time to realise that fashion is not about following others, but to make your own statement with your personal style, without any clouded judgement. so start looking for YOUR perfect fit, because fashion begins the moment you decide to be yourself.

3. black sling/ shoulder bag

three things needed to survive? air, water and a cute black bag. haha! a simple yet elegant and sophisticated look is never achieved without the presence of the most important accessory, a black shoulder bag! it goes perfectly well with any outfit and should be at the top of your list of everyday bags.

a personal favourite, unfortunately still in my wishlist is the prada re-edition 2005 nylon shoulder bag, which in my opinion is the most trendy and fun shoulder bag one can own.

4. sneakers

sneakers are the balancing element of your look, if you’re going for the chic yet contemporary vibe with a hint of the good old fashioned vintage feel to it . sneakers are always a great option with almost every outfit, and having a pair of sneakers of a neutral colour such as white, black, or beige is a necessity.

i like to complete my basic look with the black nike sneakers, complete with the signature white tick. the contrast of black and white gives the shoe a distinguished look and a modish vibe. it is also the affordable option. if you are willing to splurge on a high end brand, i would recommend the balenciaga triple s white sneakers.

5. LBD

when does a LBD, or for all you boomers, a Little Black Dress, go out of fashion? the answer is NEVER! it is the perfect option for almost everywhere , whether its a date with your boyfriend or an after party at the club! it can be dressed up or down, and never fails to look voguish and up to date. it is definitely one of my favourites to throw on when i’m feeling too slothful to put together an outfit.

my favourite way to style a LBD is with a denim jacket and some white sneakers, a cute black shoulder bag and some hoop earrings to set off the look.
